School Bus A/C Not Blowing Cold — A Diagnostic Order That Saves Money

When a bus comes in blowing warm, the temptation is to hook up gauges and start guessing at refrigerant. Work this order instead — it's sequenced from cheapest check to most expensive part, and it catches the embarrassing stuff first.

1. Confirm the compressor clutch is engaging

Engine running, A/C on max, walk to the compressor. The clutch face should be spinning with the pulley. If the pulley spins but the face doesn't, you have an electrical or pressure-switch problem, not a refrigerant problem — yet. Jump the clutch coil briefly; if it engages, chase the circuit (thermostat, pressure switch, relay, dash switch). If it doesn't, check coil resistance and the air gap.

2. Check the obvious airflow items

Return-air filter, evaporator inlet screen, blower operation on all speeds. A bus that "cools weakly" instead of "not at all" is an airflow complaint more often than a charge complaint. Feel the duct velocity at the last outlet — long roof ducts hide dying blowers.

3. Look at the sight glass (if equipped) and the drier

Steady bubbles at full load usually mean undercharge; a milky glass means moisture. Touch-test the drier: inlet and outlet should be the same temperature. A cold or frosted outlet means the drier is plugged and acting like a restriction.

4. Now put gauges on it

Rough expectations for an R-134a bus system at operating temp: low side 25–40 psi, high side 180–300 psi depending on ambient and system. Read the pair together: low/low = undercharge or restriction upstream of the evaporator; low/high = restriction (TXV, drier, kinked line); high/high = overcharge, condenser airflow, or air in the system; equalized fast on shutdown with no cooling = suspect compressor valves.

5. If the system is low, find the leak — don't just top it off

Bus systems hold multiples of what a car holds, and refrigerant is expensive. UV dye plus a light finds most leaks at hose crimps, service valves, the compressor shaft seal, and condenser tube ends. Rooftop unit fittings that see body flex are chronic offenders.

6. Idle vs. road speed tells you about the condenser

Cools fine on the highway but not in the parking lot? Condenser fan motor, fan relay, or a coil packed with debris. At road speed, ram air hides all three.

Classic marginal-charge behavior. As ambient rises, a slightly low system loses capacity first at the hottest part of the day. It can also be an iced evaporator finally soaking through — check for water dumping under the bus after shutdown.

How much refrigerant does a school bus A/C system hold?
Anywhere from about 4 lbs on a small cutaway with a single evaporator to 12+ lbs on a full-size bus with dual systems. It is always on the system data tag, not a number to guess. If the tag is gone, the system brand and model determine it — call us with what's on the compressor and evaporator tags.

Can I use automotive R-134a cans on a bus?
The refrigerant is the same, but "top it off with cans" is how bus systems end up overcharged with unknown oil amounts. Weigh in the charge per the data tag after fixing the leak.
